  1. International schools face growing recruitment, engagement and retention problems leading to negative impact on education, finances and reputation.

  2. International teachers often underestimate the shift in mindset required and lack clarity about their current and future goals. There is little support to assist educators process their professional and personal learning experiences and integrate them effectively on their return home.

 An increasing number of people, especially teachers, are working abroad for extended periods of time.  There are 4,300 British International Schools globally, making up 45% of the international schools market. There are over 250 brand new schools opening every year fueled by the demand for English medium education mainly in the Middle East and Asia.

The challenge for International Schools: i) 94% of international school leaders have difficulties recruiting the required quality of permanent staff.

There is an annual merry go round of teachers on the international teaching circuit: The effects of this instability include

 a) Difficulties of implementing School Development Plans

 b) A negative impact of students’ learning as they have to rebuild relationships with several new staff often with diverse expectations, cultural differences and curriculum expertise

 c) Adversely affects staff morale as colleagues frequently changing

d) Huge expenditure on recruitment, induction, training incurred by the school, money that could be spent of professional development including coaching.

Our career satisfaction greatly impacts our families and relationships as well as customers and fellow employees. I have witnessed the sadness and disruption caused by unnecessary staff turnover and low engagement, especially in international schools. I have seen the empty desk in the staff room, the disappointment on the faces of students who won't see their favourite teacher again and thought there must be a better way.

Fortunately Gallup research over 40 years has identified the conditions in which people flourish in their professional and personal life. My mission is support international educators and expats using the Clifton Strengths Assessment and individual coaching.

Adapting to life in an unfamiliar country, combined with a new job, can be both exhilarating and unsettling. Having worked in UK, Italy, Zimbabwe, Burma, Thailand, Australia and the United Arab Emirates, I am aware of the challenges and rewards of an overseas posting.

I combine my personal insights with that of the Clifton Strengths Assessment to empower clients achieve high levels of professional and personal success during their overseas assignment. By knowing our Strengths and their respective contributions and needs, we gain the clarity and confidence we need in facing new challenges. We will get much further using our Strengths than by trying to eliminate our weaknesses.
